What We Do
admin on 06 Feb 2008 | Uncategorized
Our goal is to empower charities through information technology. Specifically, we:
- collect “swag” to provide students with much-needed school supplies
- collect hardware to establish computer classrooms
- offer free technical services through “microprojects”
“Swag For Charity”

Swag? According to Wikipedia, swag “usually refers to promotional items or gifts that are given away by companies or organizations. It can also simply be used as a slang term for inexpensive gifts in general.” Swag for Charity? Yup. Give us those giveaways. To you it’s another handy tote you’ll never use. To a kid in an underdeveloped country, it’s a book bag, and he’ll use it every day. To you, it’s one of a hundred pens. To that same kid, it’s one of one. Don’t even get us started on pencils, notepads, rulers, calculators, flashlights and USB drives. If you’ve got some of this stuff kicking around, you can make a difference in a child’s life by sending it to us. Fill out this form we’ll get back to you. Right now, our swag is destined to Uganda, Africa. We’ve already sent one swag shipment (click here) and completed our first in-country swag distribution (click here). Help us continue our efforts with your donations!
The Computer Classroom Initiative
We are currently accepting hardware donations for use in computer classrooms in some of the world’s poorest countries. It may seem odd to deploy computer classrooms to areas where children often go without food, but these classrooms are part of a bigger initiative. By partnering with organizations (like AOET) dedicated to providing food, shelter, medical care and education, a computer classroom becomes a powerful weapon aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty. Even in the world’s most remote areas, computer skills (especially word processing) provide an extremely viable source of sustainable income. By providing relevant, marketable skills training, students are empowered, providing them with a bright future in which they can support themselves and their families without the need for charitable “handouts.” Through personal and corporate donations, our first classroom has become a reality. See the story here.
Technical Services through “Microprojects”
This is the initiative that raises eyebrows. We employ volunteer hackers (no questions asked) and engage their skills in short “microprojects” designed to help charities that can not afford traditional technical resources. Our industry experts vet all the work to guarantee a high-quality product, and volunteers are rewarded with glowing references from our industry-recognized subject matter experts. With each project, our volunteers move one step closer to that dream job, and a charity is brought one step closer to it’s technical goals. We’ve designed and built web sites, set up blogs, programmed custom web applications, conducted code reviews, performed security assessments and more, all through our volunteer’s efforts. In addition, thanks to one donor, we provide hosting, bandwidth and support for the final product– free of charge.
