Get Involved!

We want to plug you into what we’re doing and our goal is to fully engage you in our life-saving mission. So we offer a few creative (and some not-so-creative) ways to plug you in. On this page, you can learn how to buy shirts and hoodies, donate your skills and time, donate hardware or make a financial gift.

Donate Your Skills.

There’s something you do well. Somewhere, an organization desperately needs your skill but can’t afford you. You’ve probably got some spare time, even if you don’t think you do. Why not put that spare time to good use? Join our Volunteer Network and you can use some of your spare cycles to make a huge difference for an organization in need.

They’ll be grateful and we guarantee there’s nothing like the feeling you’ll get from giving of yourself. Who knows, you may even qualify for some wicked incentives we’re lining up like signed books, conference passes, resume fodder from industry experts, free training courses and much more.

Buy the shirt!

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 6.22.41 PMBuy the ultimate conversation starter! You’ll be amazed at the dirty looks and snide comments you’ll get when you wear this. People will swear you’re that Anonymous “guy” because only a hacker of “pure evilness” would hack a charity! You’ll get a chance to set people straight.. about Anonymous and HFC all in one shot! And TSA will put you in the “special” line every time you wear it to the airport. Buy the hoodie and wear it hood-up for extra evil effect!

Donate Hardware.

If this page took less than five seconds to load, you’re in good shape, technologically speaking. That means you’ve probably got an upgrade trail of gear that’s fallen by the wayside as you climbed the ever lengthening ladder to technical Nirvana. Your upgrade leftovers are like gold to charities and non-profits all over the world that are struggling financially.

So put it to use! Join our Volunteer Network as a donor and let us help you connect with charities that could use the gear. You will likely get a tax write-off, but you’ll be able to unload that gear and most importantly make a huge difference for charities in need!

Hackers For Charity didn’t just appear out of the blue. It’s been a many-year process that began with Johnny and Jen Long’s various trips to Africa in 2006 through 2008. Over time, their passion for the plight of the vulnerable in East Africa demanded that they either back away from the work or embrace it fully. The decision was obvious: they would take the next step in the path laid before them. That’s why, starting on June 15, 2009, the Long family relocated to Jinja, Uganda for one year to learn why the calling was so strong. In that year, the calling clarified and it became obvious that the Long family was being called to support organizations working on the ground in Uganda with technical support, hardware repair, Internet connectivity, computer training, food, and even lodging as they worked for the vulnerable and least privileged in Uganda. In essence, the Longs were called to “serve the servants”. In some cases, they began programs directly helping Ugandans with the “food for work” program and the leather crafting program. Read the whole story here.

With all of these service in play, it became impossible for Johnny to hold down a full-time job and time after time he was forced to choose between HFC and working in the computer security industry he had known and loved for 20 years. Eventually, Johnny chose HFC and now he and his families rely strictly on donations and the occasional speaking engagement to survive.

As of May, 2013, the Longs currently support 49 Ugandans full time through their various programs and services thanks to your generous support.

Your financial support is the lifeblood of our organization, and also the primary source of income for the Long family. That’s why we give you options when it comes to donating. You can either support HFC’s various programs or support the Long family directly. Your donation is tax-deductable, as noted on our donation page.

On behalf of HFC, the Long family and the nearly 50 Ugandans directly supported by your donation, we offer you our most heartfelt thanks.
